A "Green" Greenfield Plant in Baddi, India

Greenfield is a project that lacks any constraints imposed by prior work. The analogy is to that of construction on greenfield land where there is no need to remodel or demolish an existing structure. Green Building refers to a structure that is enviromentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from siting to design, construction and operation.

General Cable has always been interested in growing its business in India. In fact, in 2007 we formed a joint venture to do just that, but when that didn't work out as planned, we decided to establish our own company and build from the ground up.

Today, General Cable India is a 100% subsidiary of General Cable Corporation, U.S., catering to Indian customers from its modern, state-of-the-art facility situated on 20 acres of land in the industrial town of Baddi, in the beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh. Baddi is one of the fastest growing towns in Himachal Pradesh and in India. Baddi has become a manufacturing hub for Indian and multinational companies.

Two buildings were constructed on the site. The smaller building, 875 square meters (9,418 square feet), was designed to produce building wire. The larger cable plant, 16,000 square meters (172,222 square feet), has a 35-meter (115-foot) continuous vulcanization (CV) tower.

"We recognize our role and responsibility in promoting sustainability," said Sandeep Sood, Country Head, India. "Therefore, we designed and built our facilities to be compliant with Indian Green Building Council standards. They were designed to reduce their overall impact on the environment."

Both buildings were designed to:

"By designing 'green' from the ground up, we have seen immediate benefits in operating costs," continued Sandeep. "These include energy savings of 20 to 30% when compared to other wire and cable operations our size that make similar products. I also believe we have created a better-quality work environment for our associates, which will promote good health and safety practices and therefore increase productivity."

We are off to a great 'green' start, and we are excited about our future in serving the growing Indian market," concluded Sandeep.
