SECRI Launched China’s First LCA Report on Aluminum Alloy Cable

In March 2014, the first life cycle assessment (LCA) report for aluminum alloy cable was launched in Shanghai, China, as the initiator and chief editorial organization, Shanghai Electric Cable Research Institute (SECRI), investigated the environmental performance indicators of aluminum alloy cable throughout its entire lifespan and also explain its application values. The report is now available as a reference source to the industry, customers and the government. As a global leader in the manufacture of aluminum alloy cable, General Cable made its contribution to the LCA report by providing both solid data and product samples, which demonstrated the company’s commitment to China market and the wire and cable industry.

The LCA report underlined the environmental factors and potential impact throughout the aluminum alloy cable's product lifespan, including raw material, production, application, disposal, and recycling. The LCA report specifically studied AA8030* (Aluminum Association Trademark) aluminum alloy cable, which has been widely applied in the American market for over 40 years and has also been used in many areas of China. The assessment should help identify, and therefore mitigate, its potential negative impact on the environment.

The report's findings show that AA8030 aluminum alloy cable was superior to copper cable in six (6) of seven (7) indicators. These six indicators were energy consumption potential, acidification potential, global warming potential, eutrophication potential, industrial water consumption and Chinese resource consumption potential.

"Wire & cable is an essential supporting industry for national economy. Its output surpassed RMB 1.2 trillion in 2012, consuming over eight (8) million metric tons of copper, aluminum and other metal material annually. Internationally, a LCA study for wire & cable products is not common and even rarer in China. Therefore, this LCA report for AA8030 aluminum alloy cable in China has significant meaning to compel further LCA research. It also plays an important role in driving sustainable development in the industry," said Mr. Wei Dong, SECRI President.

As a global leader in wire & cable industry, General Cable is committed to creating shared value for its associates, shareholders, stakeholders, and the communities in which it operates in through sustainability, health and safety, citizenship and innovation. "LCA is an emerging area of research and application internationally. It is one of the most important tools in environment management systems. This LCA report on AA8030 aluminum alloy cable is not only the first one in China, but also the first LCA report of low-voltage aluminum alloy cable in the world. We believe that the China market will make further contribution to promoting aluminum alloy cable applications worldwide with scientific study and assessment system continuously improving", concluded James Freestone, General Cable’s Senior Vice President of Global Technology.
