GENERAL CABLE'S TEAM IN JACKSON, TENNESSEE BRINGS SAFETY TO LIFE AT LOCAL SCHOOL WITH SAFESTART® COLORING CONTEST

General Cable has always put Safety at the heart of everything we do, and it is a core value around the world. In 2015, the Company kicked off a new Safety program, known as SafeStart®, which encourages team members to always think and act safely ― at work, at home and in their community. For example, at least twice a year, each of General Cable’s manufacturing facilities in North America holds Safety Beyond events, which include the families of our team members and the local communities where they live and work.
Gene Ficker, Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Manager, who is instrumental in all Safety initiatives for General Cable’s plant in Jackson, Tennessee, came up with an idea for a Safety Beyond project that involved his wife (Kathy) and East Side Intermediate School, where Kathy is a teacher. The idea was an art project for fourth and fifth grade students. Each student received SafeStart training and then proceeded to tell his or her SafeStart stories to the class. The students were asked to work in a coloring book that dealt with the concept of SafeStart principles. Their coloring work was then graded and also judged as part of a contest.
“Members of our plant’s Safety Committee judged the coloring books with some help from the art teacher whose class was engaged in the project,” said Gene. “I went to the school and presented the winners with their certificates of achievement and a small monetary award for each grade. I think I enjoyed it as much as the students did.”
The vice principal of East Side Intermediate School and some of the students’ parents attended the award ceremony to congratulate the winners. The school administration was very appreciative of the chance to show off their students’ abilities and also to bring the philosophies from the SafeStart program into their school. In the photo are some of the winners who received awards.
Great job to the GC Jackson team and the students of East Side Intermediate School for making a personal commitment to safety and health, every day!
