General Cable associates are committed to their role as responsible corporate citizens in the communities where they live and work. The associates in our Johannesburg, South Africa facility chose two great causes in 2012 on which to concentrate their efforts.

The Orlando Children's Home was established in 1940 by the Johannesburg Child Welfare Society to help children in need of care in Soweto, South Africa. At that time, 15 homeless boys were brought from the Germiston “Bantu Reserve” as its first residents. Today, the Home looks after 60 children ranging in age from three months to 18 years. The Orlando Children's Home offers services to deal with problems of abandonment, neglect and abuse of children. General Cable associates provide donations to the Home throughout the year to meet the needs of these children.

General Cable associates have also “adopted” Alafang High School in Spruitview, South Africa. The school is located in a disadvantaged neighborhood and many students live below the poverty level. Our associates not only donate items needed for daily school activities, they also give of their time in the school rooms to encourage continuing education and the importance of graduation from secondary school. In addition to their regular school work, the students learn about General Cable. We hope they may consider employment with our Company after they graduate.

We commend our associates in Johannesburg as they continue to be responsive to the diverse social needs in their local community, as do many of our other associates around the world.
