General Cable Des Plaines Supports the Greater West Town Community Development Program (GTWP)

Harvey Pena, Distribution Center & Warehouse Coordinator at General Cable’s Des Plaines, Illinois facility, has been on the Board of Directors for the Greater West Town Community Development Project (GTWP) for the last three years. The GWTP is a non-profit group that empowers long-term public aid recipients and limited English-speaking immigrants in inner city Chicago by teaching them job skills they need to compete in today’s marketplace. Their effective strategies for expanding educational, career preparation and employment opportunities for the community’s disadvantaged population are evident in the caliber of their program participants, the products they produce, and in their ability to meet the needs of area employers for a more skilled and job-ready workforce.

Harvey grew up in inner-city Chicago and graduated from GWTP 15 years ago before starting his employment at General Cable as a Shipping Clerk. Using the skills he learned at GWTP, Harvey worked his way up from Shipping Clerk to the position he holds today.

Harvey is proud to give back to his community by serving on the Board of Directors and working with an organization that changes the lives of 1,370 disadvantaged residents each year. As a member of the board, he contributes to the collective decision-making with other members of GWTP, helping guide the curriculum of GWTP, and by doing guest speaking, providing program participants with insight from an employer’s point of view.

“GWTP is a no-nonsense community development program that works!” says Harvey. “It is a true honor to give back to a program that continues to grow and succeed in making such a hugely positive impact in the community. I am proud to be able to give others the opportunity that I was given 15 years ago.”

General Cable Des Plaines has hired two other graduates of the GWTP program. David Mendez is a Parts Picker and has been with General Cable almost 14 years, and Idalia Herrera is a Senior Shipping & Receiving Clerk who has been with General Cable for more than four years.
